In life and in fashion, trying new things is important. In life, it can lead to new opportunities, friendships, personal growth and even happiness. In fashion, it can boost your confidence, change the way that others perceive you and yes, even bring you happiness. I took a career development course offered by the company I work for the other day. As I sat there listening to the facilitator, I felt a little excitement as fresh ideas to develop my team and new ways of approaching old problems came to me.
So maybe trying something new in fashion won’t help you solve any problems you are facing. But adding something unexpected to your wardrobe or just wearing the clothes you have in a fresh way can add a little bounce in your step. If you are a pants girl, why not take the plunge and wear shorts this summer? You might realize they look better on you than you thought. A friend of mine recently bought a pair of shorts after years and of not wearing them and worried about how she would look. Turns out, she looked fabulous and inspired me to go out and get some as well. Here are some other ideas for this summer:
- Shorts – don’t wear shorts because you don’t like your legs? Try wearing shorts that stop just below your hips. Usually the part of our legs we don’t like are our knees and upper thighs. Wearing shorts of this length will draw attention to the length of your leg rather than your knees. Shorts are everywhere right now, but check out Joe Fresh and Club Monaco for simple styles with just the right amount of detail.
- Add a summer scarf – instead of toting around your usual lightweight cardigan, buy a light cotton scarf in a colour that makes you smile. It can do double duty – wrap around your neck for a chic look or wear over your shoulders in chilly air-conditioning or on a cool night. I suggest owning two – a neutral shade and a pop of colour or print to add interest to an outfit. Urban Outfitters or H&M are always great stand-bys for this year round accessory.
- Wear some bold jewelry- After all those winter layers are shed, summer is the time the jewelry you own (or wish to own) really shines. Stack on those chunky bangles, wear a bold necklace with a simple tank, put on some long earrings with your hair pulled back. Dig through your own jewelry box, your mom or sisters or check out local arts fairs and flea markets for interesting pieces that speak to you.
