This is the first of a two part guest post by my friend, Michael Dorr.
Recently I participated in a detox diet. I'm not exactly sold on the whole idea of them, but I did think it was a great exercise in self-discipline and improved consciousness. Until I started the cleanse, I didn't realize I had been eating a Starbucks scone every day. So all in all, it was an enlightening experience.
Yesterday, the idea of detoxing took on a new form. I was stopped at a red light in trendy Liberty Village when I observed that every single person crossing my path was wearing denim. Don't get me wrong - I love a good pair of jeans - but have you ever noticed how pervasive they are? Are jeans a standard issue uniform for us North Americans? Do we really think we are expressing our fashion-individuality while wearing the exact same bottoms as everyone else? The lack of fashion diversity is jarring and very dull.
At that moment, I realized that I was also wearing jeans. And I had been wearing jeans every day that week. Something had to be done - an intervention - no, a detox. So I am applying my detox diet principles to my predictable and boring wardrobe. Here are the details of the program if you wish to follow along with me:
One Week, No Jeans.
I think the absence of jeans will spark a bit more creativity in my wardrobe. I don't plan on wearing pantaloons to the office - but I think there's a lot of choice between chinos and slacks (spanning casual to professional). And how fun is it to say slacks? Very. For the ladies, the choices expand even further with dresses, skirts, and trousers.
I have to say, I'm excited. I enjoy assigning myself projects (probably a little too much). And who knows how far I can take this? Maybe I'll be denim free for two weeks or more! And maybe, for good measure, I'll stop talking to my friend Jean too. One week, no jeans! Wish me luck!

I agree, dressin gin jeans on a day-to-day basis for me is often something I do withoutthinking twice about. It's funny to note how I own 5 pairs of jeans and only ONE pair of classy black pants! I would love to take up your challenge, but am araid that my lifestyle as a freelance writer is way to casual to gress up everyday. May be I'll start by NOT wearing jeans when I'm out with friends or meeting clients!
I love this! Michael can't wait to see how your week goes...we want to see pics! I agree with Meena though, as a student, not sure I could do it!
i love your post. i never really wear jeans, only when someone tells me to wear them. i hate them....too restrictive. i'm more of a khaki person...mabe a woolen trouser or so. jeans are off limit for me!!
Hi Meena,
Definitely let us know how that goes!
Kena
It's just as easy, and comfortable, to slip on something other than jeans and you'll look SOOO much nicer.
