This is the second post by Beauty Expert, Renita Paranjape.
You're all set - you've got your boots, chunky knit sweaters and wool trousers on stand-by for the first day of frost. With more of you covered up, your face takes center stage once again. Time to update your make-up for the new season. The fall look seen at Marc Jacobs, Chloe and Dolce and Gabbana (and who can argue with them?) was a crimson lip with a neutral eye. There are two ways to wear this look: softened for work or weekend or fully glammed up for night.
No, no, Drama!
Lips: Try a little colour on your lips for the fall season after a summer of nude lips with a gloss with a deeper pigment. I like Smashbox's line of glosses and my particular favourite is a dark reddish shade called Icon.
Cheeks: Wear that bronzer into fall! If you don't already own one, look for one with a pinkish pigment. It will give you that fresh faced, rosy cheeked look indicative of cooler weather.
Eyes: I still love the liquid liner look and I think can be pulled off in any season when done right. I love Bobby Brown Longwear Eyeliner. It comes in a pot and with the right angled brush, it is nearly impossible to make a mistake! Draw on a thin line, add mascara, and you are good to go. If you want to take it to the next level, add a light to medium gray shadow. Swipe on your lids, being careful not to apply colour outside the eyelid area as this will create a messy (think Racoon) look and will not achieve the subtlety you are going for.
Drama Queen
Lips: Choose a matte, deep red colour from any of the lipstick brands you like. I like Bobby Brown Brick Red (available at Holt Renfrew) or Nars, Fire down Below. The deeper and darker the red, the better. Apply some lip balm, your chosen red lipstick, and blot with a tissue for a stained lip look.
Cheeks: With your lips as the focus, it is better to keep cheeks matte and understated. Skip bronzers or shimmering colours and go for a matte, neutral blush. My all time favourite is MAC's matte blush in Mocha. For a redder version of my favourite, try Bobbi Brown's powder blush in Currant.
Eyes: I am revealing the secrets to the smoky eye which is actually less complicated than it seems. Start with a gray shadow palette that includes light, medium and dark shades of gray. Next follow these 5 steps:
- Sweep the lightest colour gray across your entire lid, almost up to your brow bone.
- Apply the darker colour gray to the outside corners of your lids. Pat it on rather than brushing it on to keep the colour in a concentrated area.
- Take the medium colour gray, and apply it onto the rest of your eyelid, stopping at the crease.
- Blend! Use your brush to blend the colour starting from the outside to the inside of your eye lids. The goal is to smudge the line between the dark and medium colour shadow as best you can.
- Finally, dip an angled brush in water and then into the deepest gray or even a black shadow. Line your eyes. For an ultra-dramatic smoky eye, use a dark grey or black pencil to line your bottom lids and smudge with a make-up sponge.
For this dramatic look, keep in mind that you can follow all of the above, or you can choose to do a crimson lip with a neutral eye or smoky eyes with a bit of gloss. Play with it and have fun!
