I have been inspired by Diane Von Furstenberg (DVF) ever since finding (and subsequently devouring) her book Diane: A Signature Life in a bargain bin at a book store in Palo Alto, CA. She not only paved her way as a designer at a time (1970) when the role was primarily dominated by men, but she made accessible, beautiful clothes for real women long before Donna Karan came along. Her signature piece, the wrap dress, is easy, feminine and timeless and should be in every woman's closet at some point in her lifetime. Although she married (and later divorced) a prince, and could have lived a life of leisure, she once explained, "The minute I knew I was going to be Egon's wife, I decided to have a career. I wanted to be someone of my own, and not just a plain little girl who got married beyond her desserts."
Diane has also lived through tough times (divorce, breast cancer, near bankruptcy) as we all do, but it is her recounts of how she managed through those times that have inspired me through tough times of my own. While in daily treatment for breast cancer, she chose the long walk to the hospital rather than drive, as a commitment to her physical and spirtual health. At many difficult times in her life, she found ways to care for her family and friends, but never at the expense of caring for herself. Despite being a central member of the urban-centric fashion world, Diane is most inspired by and comforted by nature, which is reflected in many of the prints she has designed over the years. Diane Von Fursterberg is all style, in life and in fashion.
And breaking news, DVF.com is launching a blog today, called Inside DVF. The blog will include news, cultural advice, and photos and posts by Diane herself so you can be personally inspired by her glamourous and full day-to-day life.
Check out some of my favourites from her Spring 2009 Collection:
