This holiday, while shopping for friends and family on your list, consider giving a gift with heart.  There are many opportunities to purchase the perfect gift while supporting a cause or charity.

Unicef:  Pick up your holiday cards or gifts for your office mates at this online shop and support children in need in developing countries.   You can also find Unicef merchandise in Canada at Pier 1, Rona and the Bay.

ShopSickKids: A portion of proceeds from this online boutique go to the SickKids Foundation, a world-class Toronto based children's hospital.  You can purchase anything from jewelry, to children's books, to cameras.

World Vision: Buy a gift for a family in need overseas.  Are you thinking a dvd player?  Nope, gifts include two hens and a rooster ($55).

Gifts of Light:  Purchase comforting gifts (a blanket ($35), pj's and slippers ($45)) for patients at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that may not have the warmth of family and home during the holiday season.

Love this. I agree Christmas should be about helping others less fortunate. Great post.

Thanks! I have already purchased Unicef Holiday cards and am planning to support worldvision as well as buy a gift for a patient at CAMH.

There are actually a lot of non-profits and charities that do this kind of thing for the holiday season. My girlfriends and I bought a goat for a village in Sudan one year thorugh Oxfam instead of doing a gift exchange! Its such a great way to support a cause you feel strongly about during the holiday season!
