A favourite look by Phillip Lim for 3.1 Phillip Lim

My favourite scene in The Devil Wears Prada is when Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep) goes on a rant about Andy's (Anne Hathaway's) blue sweater in response to her casual comment about fashion being "stuff".

"In 2002 Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns, and then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets, and then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers, and then it filtered down through the department stores, and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you no doubt fished it out of some clearance bin, however, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs, and its sort of comical how you think you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry, when in fact, you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room…from a pile of stuff."

For those of us who passionately work in the fashion industry, Miranda Priestley's speech is vindication.  So while the trends on the catwalk may currently seem to have nothing to do with your life or your wardrobe, they will.  Might as well stay on top of what will eventually filter down to your closet - sooner or later!   I have whittled a weeks worth of Fall 2009 fashion down into a recap of the best of NY Fashion Week, which wrapped up on Friday.  Be inspired by beautiful, perfectly wearable fashion.
