Vacation Close to Home

in Your Life

The end of January, ugh.  We're already tired of winter, and the end is nowhere near.  We started planning for a vacation away, but with flight, hotel, and rental car it can get pricey!  Instead of skimping everywhere and having a mediocre experience, or skipping a vacation altogether (not an option!) we decided to stay close to home, saving on flights, but not holding back on the rest.

After some research, we found ourselves at the JW Mariott (Marriott's luxury hotels) in Muskoka, Ontario on Lake Rosseau.  We ate amazing meals, enjoyed spa treatments, but most of all, experiencing winter the way it is meant to be experienced (the picture above speaks louder than words).  The service was fantastic, and even though we were only hours from home, we felt like we were on a true getaway.  It got me thinking about other ways to get that vacation feeling without a plane ticket or long drive involved...

  • Gather up the girls and head off to a spa out of town.  Most spas have facilities (steam room, baths, pool) that are included with any treatment.  After a day of relaxation, pile into one room, order room service and catch up.
  • Plan a full day in the city with your mom.  Brunch, shop, visit a museum, see a movie.
  • For a romantic evening, book a luxurious hotel and high-end restaurant you have never been to and plan an evening away from home.
  • If you live in a big city, visit another neighbourhood and spend some time exploring the streets, shops and art galleries.  Stop for coffee at a local café.  Notice the vibe and feel of the neighbourhood.

Any other ideas?
