Shopping the Summer Sales

Summer to FallThere are some amazing sales going on right now.  It is tempting to run buck wild and snap up every fluttery, summery, lovely dress out there!  But I want clothes with longevity.  Clothes that will transition from summer into fall in the most effortless way.  So when I hit the shops with my sister last weekend to update my closet for my new job, I exercised restraint and went in with a clear strategy.  If you are planning to go shopping soon, I hope this pre-purchase checklist helps.  If you already have gone shopping, perhaps this post will prompt you to make a few exchanges/returns.

1.  Can it be layered? Picture wearing tights, adding a cardigan or blazer on top or a long sleeve T underneath.  If you can layer it, you easily transition the item into fall.  (I love the long sleeve white T layered under the orange, otherwise summery knit dress above.)

2.  Avoid very lightweight fabrics.  A gauzy cotton dress is perfect for hot summer days but will stick to your hosiery and look out of place under a chunky cardigan come fall.  A perfect transitional purchase?  A sweater dress!

3.  Stick to rich colours and/or prints grounded in black. If you could add black tights, a charcoal or black cardigan or jacket to the item or pair it with dark trousers, then it has the legs to take you through to fall.  (The two printed dresses above are great examples of summer dresses that can easily make the seasonal transition.  Even the floral print works as it is grounded in black and grey)

Finally, when it comes to shoes, try to find closed-toe styles that will carry you into cooler months.  If you are tempted by a beautiful embellished sandal or a too-cheap- to-pass-up trendy style, think about whether you love it enough to wear it next summer.

What are your strategies for shopping the summer sales?

I am also a big believer in buy what you like regardless of timing. You can never have enough button down oxfords!

There are so many good deals! I have been buying lots of basics for Rory for next summer and some great basics like white dress shirts for me!
