Making the Most of Business Travel

I recently returned from a week long buying trip to San Francisco and LA.  I have a love-hate relationship with business travel.  I love hotel rooms, time to myself, and trying new restaurants, but hate waiting for flights, delayed flights, heavy bags and standing in any sort of line.  Having traveled quite a bit in my previous life at Banana Republic I have a few of my own personal tips for making the most of a business trip.  What are some of yours?

In Flight:

  • Indulge in trashy magazines and novels. Along with Vogue and Fast Company, I will pick up US and People.  The only time I will allow myself to buy gossip mags is when I fly!  (I know, that doesn't make it right)
  • Pack a snack. Plane food sucks these days.  Plain and simple.  Pack a nice sandwich, some fruit, good chocolate and roasted nuts for a snack and be the envy of fellow passengers.
  • Bring a scarf to wrap around your shoulders and wear as an accessory. You have heard this before.  But it is so smart!  A stylish scarf will keep you warm on and off the plane and acts as the perfect accessory.
  • Wear something nice on the plane and carry a business card. You never know when you might meet someone who could connect you to your next job or business opportunity.  Heard of the elevator speech?  What does your plane speech look like? (ok obviously should not cover the length of a flight!)

At the Hotel:

  • Order Room Service. When else do you get to lie on a comfy bed and have someone deliver a delicious meal right to your door on a tray with a white linen napkin?
  • Use the Hotel Gym. I love the simplicity and chicness of a hotel gym.  And there is usually an added little touch like cucumber infused water that you would miss out on if you didn't go.
  • Take the Free Bathroom Amenities. When I am staying at a beautiful hotel, I can't resist pocketing the mini bottles of shampoo and conditioner.  I take them with me when visiting friends or when forced to stay in Pantene-providing lodging.
