#50. Take out your camera and experiment

We all watch too much TV. Don't you think?  Ok there are a few exceptions, but for the most part it is far too acceptable in our culture to spend hours a day staring at a screen.  I have definitely fallen victim to this, especially if I've been going through a hard time.  It is the easiest way to shut off and shut down.  And sometimes, there are a lot of good things to watch.  But too often watching TV is just a result of not knowing what to do with extra time.  It's sad that we all complain about not having enough time, yet we spend so much time watching TV. But I'm not writing this to slap the hands of everyone who ever reaches for the remote control (that would mean slapping myself too).  It's just that there are so many other things to do!  Some productive, some fun, but all life-enhancing and happiness-creating.

Here are fifty ideas off the top of my head (literally!):

  1. Make your lunch for the next day
  2. Bake something delish!
  3. Workout at the gym
  4. Call a friend you haven't spoke to in a while
  5. Start a blog on a topic you are passoniate about
  6. Look up recipes for the coming week
  7. Grocery shop at your local market
  8. Read a novel, favourite magazine or blog
  9. De-clutter one room in your home
  10. Do laundry
  11. Give yourself a facial
  12. Go for a walk
  13. Play cards or do a puzzle
  14. Cook something outside of your comfort zone
  15. Search for new music on itunes
  16. Listen to music and do nothing else but listen
  17. Give yourself a manicure
  18. Write a letter on pretty stationery
  19. Read non-fiction and learn something
  20. Create a budget
  21. Meditate
  22. Choose your outfit for the next day - have fun with it!
  23. Brainstorm book ideas
  24. Listen to a podcast
  25. Decorate a room
  26. Play in your closet and create new outfits!
  27. Create a styleboard
  28. Give yourself a pedicure
  29. Write a wildest dreams list
  30. Paint or make a craft
  31. Take a bath (for the record, I am not a bath person but friends swear by them!)
  32. Plan out your weekend
  33. Sew on missing buttons so you can finally wear that item!
  34. Look up concerts coming into town and buy tickets
  35. Do yoga
  36. Iron clothes you never wear because they are always wrinkly!
  37. Teach yourself to play a musical instrument
  38. Shape your eyebrows
  39. Brainstorm business ideas
  40. Track your spending and monitor your budget
  41. Teach yourself to dance or just dance for fun!
  42. Become an expert on a subject (buddhism, french cooking, the history of hip-hop anyone?)
  43. Plan a trip, big or small
  44. Create a playlist for different occasions: workouts, brunch, dinner, etc
  45. Do something for someone else
  46. Plan a party
  47. Research volunteer opportunities
  48. Write in a journal
  49. Experiment with make-up and give yourself a new look
  50. Take out your camera and experiment

Wow! Nice list to keep in mind. One thing I always think I should do but I always postpone...tidy up my thousand papers (bills, letters from different companies, old documents not any longer valid...).

That is a great one! And it is so satisfying when done. Those piles always make me nervous...

I don't own a TV, and I still don't have time to do most of the things on your list. "Stuff" flows into a time vacuum no matter what you're doing, alas.

So true...but if we can get one or two things knocked off its a good thing!
