How to Prevent a Hole in the Toe of Your Tights

Wolfords: The Ultimate Tights

Tights are truly the most convenient winter dressing choice.  You can slip them into any boot; short or tall, flat or heeled, dressy or functional.  There are so many great sweater tights options now that staying warm isn't even an issue.

I'll tell you what my issue is:  holes in the toes.  My sister and I both seem to have above average issues with tearing through the toes of tights in record time.  It is ridiculous actually .  It doesn't even matter how expensive they are.  Just this past week I felt my toe sticking through my lovely DKNY pointelle sweater tights (worn only twice!) into my winter boot.  If you read this post, you'll know that this is one of my GREATEST pet peeves.  I am now on a prevention mission and have done my homework.

How to avoid getting a hole in the toe of your tights (and other snags):

  • Keep toenails's neatly filed with no jagged edges.  A single edge can create a tiny hole, and if you don't catch, they are a goner. (permission to get a pedicure, granted!)
  • Put them on feet first. Bunch up the whole leg and cover your entire foot before pulling them up the rest of your leg.
  • Buy a size up. This basically gives them a little extra give so they don't pull as much around your toes.
  • Choose opaque rather than sheer. Opaque tights are more densely woven so can withstand greater wear (but not tear!)

If you get a teeny tiny hole: Use clear nailpolish to patch it stat.

Good tights options: Wolford's are really the ultimate tights. The company has been around for over 50 years and are known in the industry for their innovation in fabric, construction and fashion.  Another great option is DKNY's line, but you can alsof find good choices at any of your favourite mass brands.

What are your tips for avoiding holes and snags in your tights?

I've had good experience with H&M 100 den tights. They're very thick and opaque, wash well (in a lingerie bag)....and are pretty affordable! I have this one pair that I've worn for the last two winters and they are still going strong!

I try to be very careful with the rings I am wearing...more than once this has been the reason for tearing the tights while putting them on. :( (

I had the same issue. My tip: wear a thin pair of short socks under your tights. Worked for me! And I love American Apparel tights.

Great tip Vicky! You're so right...and there is nothing worse than snagging a brand new pair.

Amazing tip Samra! Thanks so much. I'm definitely going to try that the next time I wear tights. :)
