That’s What the Pros Do

If you want to be a stylist, you might want to learn from Rachel

Last week Jonathan Fields wrote a post about all the things he accomplished in January alone. As explanation for how he did it, his simple response was "That's what pros do".  It really got me thinking about anyone who has a dream they are trying to reach.  Almost anything you or I might want to do has likely been done before, and successfully, by someone else.  Whether you want to master photography, run your own business, or write a book, doesn't it make sense to do what the pros do?

Six Strategies to Learn from the Pros:

1.  Hold informational interviews. You would be surprised how willing people are to help if you ask nicely, show sincere passion, treat their time with respect and avoid asking for a job (at least not right away).

2.  Read everything you can including blogs, books, biographies about people who have accomplished what you want to. Study and take notes.

3.  Be open to meeting new people. You never know who you might meet at the hair salon, in the elevator or at that networking event.

4.  Seriously, just START. Landing a national television commercial starts with an acting class.  Opening a restaurant starts with trying a new recipe tonight.  You have to start somewhere but the key is to START.

5.  Put in the time. Experts will tell you that there is no such thing as an overnight success.  Anyone who has accomplished anything worthwhile has put in hundreds of hours of work and/or practice.

6.  Don't give up too soon. A friend of mine was considering closing down her clothing boutique after nearing almost five years in business as it wasn't quite where she wanted it to be yet.  But sales are up, they have a steady clientele, and the shop has becoming easier to manage after years of experience.  She did her research and learned that it often takes at least five years for a retail business to truly get off the ground.  She's decided to keep it open and I know big success is right around the corner for her.

Want to follow your dream?  Learn from the pros.

I love this article. I would also suggest you tell people about your dream. My Auzzie friend was dying to start a new career in NY mentioned her dream job to some random guy in a bar. This guy knew someone who had her dream job and was looking to hire. She worked for free for a few weeks and eventually landed the job with a good salary. Goes to show you never know who you might meet who can help you out.

Thanks fiona! This is a great piece of advice - I totally agree - I think the universe helps things fall into place when you say what you want out loud!!

This article speaks the truth, just not with careers but with life in general. Nothing is ever handed to you, you have to put in hard work + determination + patience to get anything you need out of life. Also, thanks Kena for the lovely comment on my blog.
