A Space to Dream, Create, Imagine

My desk is a mess!  Piles of paper, unopened bills (better deal with those!) and pens with dried up ink are all cluttering up my creative space.  A clear and organized desk is not just about space to work, but about space to think, dream, create  and imagine.  Your desk should inspire you and support your big beautiful ideas, whether that is to to write a masterpiece,  pen a letter to an old friend or invent a new recipe.  Here are some things to consider when setting up (and cleaning up!) your ideal desk:

1.  Don't let it look like your cube at work. Keep your workspace at home intensely personal with framed photos, beautiful objects picked up on your travels and colours that reflect the rest of your home.

2.  Choose objects with form and function. Let beautiful objects do double duty.  A silver cup can hold pens and pencils, a wooden box, unopened letters, etc.

3.  An Inspiring View. Set up your desk somewhere that inspires you.  My desk is facing a window with a beautiful view.  If that is not an option for you, ensure that when you are sitting at your desk you are looking at a piece of art or a framed photo - not a messy bulletin board.

4.  Add flowers or plants to bring nature inside and improve air quality.

5. Emphasize warmth and light. Draw warmth from a favourite scented candle (I am a fan of these soy wax candles from Illume - you can buy them at Pistachio in Toronto!) and ensure you have enough light with the right lamp, whether it is a desk or table lamp.

6.  Keep your favourite supplies within easy reach. There is nothing more frustrating than digging around for a pen that works or for an envelope to mail your letter.  Keep all necessities in good supply, order and within easy reach.  Some basics: pens, pencils, paper clips, envelopes, stationery, a notepad and thank you cards.
